In the past year I have run into more than a couple parents asking me an important question “Why should my child publish a book?”. I think the best way for me to make this clear to you is explaining this from 3 different perspectives, from the parents, the children, and from us educators.
Many parents have told me the reason they don’t see the need is mainly due to the fact they don’t think their kids are capable of writing a decent enough story. Since they themselves might not even have the ability to write such story that deserves to be published. On top of that, they know it would usually cost a lot of money to publish a book, therefore would stay away from any thought of even considering it.
Kids are probably the most confident group of people in the world. Ninety nine out of a hundred kids will tell you that they are interested in getting their stories published. They may not be able to write yet, and wouldn’t take their incompetence into consideration for a second! All they want is to feel the sense of pride holding their own book in their hands. If you don’t believe me, just ask your own kid and find out.
From our perspective it’s pretty straight forward, since it’s what our existence is based on.
First, we want all Children in the world to have a voice, and we want to become that portal for them to share that voice with the rest of the world. We want them to know that their opinions matter and that their ideas and imagination are priceless. Why should we as parents depend on a bunch of 40-50 year old authors deciding for our 4,5 year old’s to where their interests should lie? Why don’t we give our children a chance to express what they think is fun with other kids in their own age group?
Second, we know the sense of accomplishment a child would feel when holding his own book, and exactly what it does to his confidence and performance in school.
We have witnessed countless cases where poor students became good students, and good students turned into great students. The benefits your child would gain from this experience are unimaginable.
That’s all I have to say for this article, please leave your thoughts and opinions in the comments below!
